- Washington, District of Columbia
Congresswoman Kim Schrier, REP. SCHRIER REFLECTS ON FIRST YEAR IN OFFICEM.D. (WA-08) has passed the one-year milestone serving the people of Washington’s Eighth District since being sworn in on January 3, 2019. Rep. Schrier serves on the Education and Labor Committee, and the Committee on Agriculture.
“I’m proud of the work we have been able to do on behalf of the people of the 8th district during my first year in office,” said Rep. Schrier. “I came to Congress to fight for families. We have already passed bills that begin to deliver on all of my priorities, including legislation to bring down the cost of prescription drugs and expand Medicare, protect people with pre-existing conditions, expand background checks for gun sales, crack down on big money and special interests in politics, combat climate change and approve the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.”
In the first year, several of Rep. Schrier’s bills passed the House:
Medicare Vision Act of 2019 would expand Medicare Part B to cover routine eye exams and glasses and contacts prescriptions for people on Medicare.
Stronger Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment (CAPTA) Act to help protect children amid the rising rates of child abuse and neglect, in part from the opioid crisisSpecialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) fix.
Rep. Schrier’s helped funding into the 2020 funding bill, this grant program would have been out of reach to Washington farmersYakima River Basin Water Enhancement Project Phase III Act is Rep. Schrier’s bill with Rep. Dan Newhouse (WA-04) that passed the House and the Senate, and was signed into law by the President in March.
The Lands Package also elevated the Mountains to Sound Greenway to a National Heritage Area.
Two other bills that Rep. Schrier worked on that passed the House in 2019 are the Lower Drugs Costs Now Act (HR 3) and Farmworker Modernization Act. The Lower Drugs Costs Now Act would bring down the cost of prescription drugs by giving Medicare the power to negotiate. These lower prices would then be available to all Americans. It will also cap out of pocket costs for seniors. The Farmworker Modernization Act overhauls our guest worker program so farmers have a dependable workforce.
Additionally, Rep. Schrier introduced the VACCINES Act, a bipartisan bill that will increase immunization rates in the country and prevent future outbreaks of contagious diseases like measles.
Added Rep. Schrier,
“The best part of my job is hearing directly from the residents of our district at town halls, ‘Conversations with Kim,’ and community events. While I am working hard to fight for families in the 8th District, it is critically important that I stay in touch with the people I represent. We’ve already been able to return $101,065 to constituents and would be honored to help others navigate federal agencies to get the help they need.”
Rep. Schrier held 26 town hall meetings, including two on wildfire preparedness and two telephone town halls. She has visited 17 farms and aquaculture facilities, 17 schools, 21 health care facilities, and 45 local businesses to learn about their needs and how she can elevate their issues in her committees.
