Moses Lake Police K-9 Rex took down 22-year-old Brian Smith Sunday night. Officers were dispatched to a storage unit facility in the 1600 Block of W. Broadway when Smith was spotted breaking into a unit. According to MLPD Smith fled the scene before officers could arrive when officials brought in the K-9 it allowed officers to get a leed on the suspect.

Smith reportedly had cut a hole in the perimeter fence of the storage unit complex, and K9 Rex tracked Smith for approximately half a mile down to Lakeshore, where Smith had buried himself in the brush on the edge of the lake. Smith ignored multiple K9 warnings and requests to surrender from officers and was located by K9 Rex and held until officers were able to maneuver through the brush to his location and apprehend him.

Smith was treated for minor injuries at Samaritan Healthcare and was then booked into the Grant County Jail on Burglary charges. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may follow.
